Educational Philosophy

Our school promotes a student-centered, community-connected learning environment focused on collaboration, real-world skills, and responsibility.

overview

The design and curriculum of Kapōlei High were influenced by the principles outlined in Breaking Ranks: Changing an American Institution, a report published by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Drawing from the essential elements of the report, Kapōlei High School focuses on fostering a student-centered learning environment and sustaining a strong partnership between the school and the community. Students engage in projects that integrate academic subjects with real-world applications, cultivating critical thinking, communication skills, and a strong sense of responsibility.

The Buildings

Many of our classrooms accommodate between 60 to 90 students at a time, fostering interaction and collaboration. As stated by our founding Principal, Mr. Alvin Nagasako, “I wanted our school to be very active, a place where the students and community can be proud. I wanted it to have an exciting learning environment, with a sense of family, One Team.” Our recent renovations completed in 2025 in G-Building and I-Building (Downstairs) continue to honor our schoolʻs vision, affording even more space and flexibility to support student learning and achievement.

‘O‘opu Hi‘u Kole Project

On November 2, 2011, Kapōlei High School, the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Mālama Learning Center, and artist Kazu Kauinana dedicated the ‘O‘opu Hi‘u Kole project. The endemic ‘o‘opu hi‘u kole—unique, adaptable, and tenacious—embodies the qualities we strive to instill in our students. On Kapōlei High School’s campus, the ‘o‘opu journey toward the library, symbolizing knowledge and the pinnacle of their journey.
